On April 1, 2025, Upemba National Park will officially retire 23 rangers who have reached the required age or met the conditions for departure. To recognize their years of dedicated service and ensure a dignified transition, an official retirement ceremony will be held in their honor the Headquarters, Lusinga.

Upemba’s rangers have been the tireless guardians of the park, often operating in extreme conditions, facing poaching threats, security risks, and environmental challenges to safeguard its integrity. Their dedication has strengthened the monitoring of the park’s last emblematic species, protected its vast plains and forests, and helped maintain the delicate balance between conservation and local community needs.
Their courage and expertise have been crucial in the fight against environmental crime, biodiversity monitoring, and training future generations. These rangers have not only risked their lives to protect the park’s wildlife and ecosystems but have also played a key role in passing down conservation values to new recruits and local populations.
In their honor, Upemba National Park reaffirms its commitment to building on their invaluable experience to ensure the continuity of conservation efforts. Their legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who carry this vital mission forward.
